Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha

Founded by Shinran Shonin, and centered on the Monshu, this religious organization includes people, Hongwanji, and individual temples that pay respect to the Hongwanji Constitution and together propagate the Jodo Shinshu teaching, conduct services, nurture ministers and members, and endeavor to awaken people to the true meaning of tariki, and contribute to the infinite welfare of all beings.

North America

Buddhist Churches of America

Founded in 1899, the Buddhist Churches of America headquartered in San Francisco today oversees 61 temples and its affiliates located within the continental United States jurisdiction. Also associated to the Buddhist Churches of America is the Institute of Buddhist Studies that is an accredited graduate institution affiliated to the Graduate Theological Institution and the recently built Jodo Shinshu Center also located in Berkeley, California.

Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii

The start of the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii began in 1889 at the Kojima Hotel in Honolulu. The Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii Headquarters today is located in Honolulu overseeing 36 temples statewide, the Buddhist Study Center, the Hongwanji Mission School, and the recently opened Pacific Buddhist Academy high school

Canada

Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temples of Canada

In 1905, the first service was conducted at the Vancouver City Hall at which over 500 were in attendance, marking the beginning of The Buddhist Churches of Canada. The Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temples of Canada presently consists of 20 temples, a fellowship, and the Living Dharma Centre which are located within five provinces in Canada.

South America

South America Hongwanji Mission

The South America Hongwanji Mission, COMUNIDADE BUDISTA SUL-AMERICANA “JODO SHINSHU HONPA HONGWANJI”, which was officially recognized by the Brazilian government in 1955, is the youngest district within the overseas temple districts. The Betsuin, located in Sao Paulo today, oversees 35 temples, 17 ministers, 17 assistant ministers and approximately 10,000 members as well as many others who show interest in Jodo Shinshu.
